The Next Door House · Monday April 24, 2006

We got a letter in the mail today; the house next door to us is going to be demolished! This is how they word it in the letter: Demolition of an existing single house and construction of two grouped dwellings.
Probably just because I’ve never had one of these letters before, I find it curious reading. The proposal for the new units don’t meet up to the local Codes. Pretty much everything is smaller than it should be, except in that one unit majorly overshadows the other (86% rather than the max of 50%). Try this line for example: “The upper level southern side setback associated with the kitchen/lounge, dingin and library/study is proposed to be 1.2m in lieu of the required 2.2m.”
Then again, maybe I just like how much they use the word ‘lieu’.

O how can you breathe little blue?
You have hooks, you have holes in you,
In absentium and in lieu of all the things that have been promised you…

A Fair Bridge
I went to the Fairbridge Folk Festival on the weekend. It was much fun. Hightlights include:

  • A songwriting workshop with Tali of Guild League/Lucksmiths fame.
  • Working with some lovely people – and yummy free fruit.
  • Some great saxophone playing (Old Dogs, New Tricks and Waiting For Guiness )
  • Numerous Gillian Welch references and songs…
  • ..And Neil Finn references :)
  • The White Family, for being talented, and behaving like a real family (and not having any fiddles).
  • Chai tent and having good company to sit with in said tent.
    And most importantly:
  • Garlands.

And then, again, sometimes it’s good just to get out of the city.
