17 days until Perth
25 days until my birthday
27 days until university starts back

It seems like everyone is in or is coming to Melbourne at the moment. All roads lead to Melbourne?

I’ve been reading little bits about Germaine Greer lately. For various reasons: a) I’d been considering whether to add her to my key female authors reading list that I’ve been working through b) I saw her on a Grumpy Old Women (it was called something like that) programme around Christmas c) I’ve been wondering about the lyrics in a song called ‘Mother Greer’ which I shall assume has to do with Germaine.

While I haven’t yet been able to shed much light on what the lyrics are referring to, I did come across a review in The Age (Melbourne newspaper) of the programme she was on (whatever it was called). It pointed out that most of the women on the programme were merely middle-aged rather than ‘old’, whinging rather than grumpy, and, in comparison to the Grumpy Old Men version, rather self-centered. Because instead of grumping about football and politics they complained about physical degeneration and having to organise Christmas. Or something.

Not having seen the Grumpy Old Men programme I can’t comment on comparisons. I think this apparent difference is an interesting thing to note, however. I thought about Journals and this own journal of mine, and even though it is of course going to be always a degree self centred by it’s very nature, I haven’t yet used it as a soapbox for my views on football or politics.

Unravelled that one? Good.

Another piece of writing I’ve come across was an essay by a convert to Islam that uses a aspects of Germaine’s books, among other things, in a twisted way to say that women belong in the home but they can still strive spiritually for a equal standing alongside men.

As for my reading list, I’m not sure whether to read both Germaine’s The Female Eunuch and The Whole Woman novels or just the later one.

“Men ought to be more conscious of their bodies as an object of delight.” – Germaine Greer

  1. not being overly familiar with greer’s work i can’t really recommend a book to start with, however being overly familiar with feminist theory in general i have often found it is best to read in chronological order if you’re looking for an overall picture of what a theorist is all about, mainly because their arguments tend to develop and change with time, thus chronology makes this easiest for the reader to follow :)
